Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield was an English electrical engineer who built the first commercially viable CT scanner at EMI Laboratories in England between 1967 and 1972.

The CT scan was co-invented by British engineer Godfrey Hounsfield and South African-born physicist Allan MacLeod Cormack.

  • Nobel Prize: Hounsfield and Cormack shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their breakthrough.
  • First Scan: The first successful clinical brain scan of a patient occurred on October 1, 1971, at Atkinson Morley’s Hospital in London.
