

Wrote the 1530 epic poem Syphilis sive morbus Gallicus (“Syphilis, or the French Disease”).
Created the name “syphilis” based on a mythical shepherd named Syphilus who was cursed by Apollo.
The concept of contagion was first scientifically formulated by the Italian physician and scholar Girolamo Fracastoro in his 1546 treatise De Contagione et Contagiosis Morbis.
Girolamo Fracastoro was famous for naming the disease syphilis and proposing an early, groundbreaking theory of contagious disease transmission that predated modern germ theory.
